The books sold in most(not all) of the bookshops let you learn new moves. Most items in the game are stored in your inventory and have to be selected and used there to have any effect. When you start out you will be holding $20.00 (¥2000 in the Japanese version) and every time you die you lose half your money since there are no banks in this game, it is imperative that you spend your starting money quickly.Ultimately, you must repeat the process of fighting gang members to obtain money, head to a mall to purchase items to restore stamina and boost stats, locate and fight a boss to make some progress, and repeat until you make it all the way to River City High, where your girlfriend and the final battle awaits. Bosses hold more money on them than normal gang members, and some bosses can be defeated repeatedly for a quick increase in funds. In order to afford all those items and power-ups, you'll need to defeat lots of gang members and obtain the change they happen to be carrying around. In order to acquire those boosts, you'll need to purchase them from stores in different malls. No matter how you play it, River City Ransom is a classic game that is a ton of fun to this day.Note: the Sharp X68000 version has additional optional areas, which are not covered here yet. Unfortunately, the lack of co-op prevents it from being the definitive version of River City Ransom that it would otherwise have been. However, the Game Boy Advance has the EX version, which adds a ton of content (including the ability to recruit characters). The PC Engine port is probably the best of all the versions of this classic. The little dialog bits that appear at the bottom of the screen also give the game a tremendous amount of charm. The RPG mechanics keep it feeling fresh and give it an excellent sense of progression. This is a title that is brimming with ambition. Marvelously, while many of the early beat-'em-up games may be a little rocky when played now, River City Ransom is absolutely the exception to the rule. While River City Ransom isn't the first Kunio-Kun game, it established the specific style of Beat-'em-Up that has persisted ever since its release in 1989.
